Extra levels of protection for offshore firefighting system (united arab emirates)

Adma-Opco is a joint venture of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, BP, Total and Japan Oil Development Company, working on the Nasr/Al-Nasr oil field just off the coast of Abu Dhabi. They needed comprehensive fire protection for their development project, and asked Knowsley SK for help.

The challenge

Effects of seawater

With Phase II of the Full Field Development Project underway, Adma-Opco were aiming to increase the field’s oil production capacity to 65,000 barrels per day, from 22,000. But to do this safely, they needed a solid offshore firefighting system they could rely on in case of emergencies. Given the offshore location, any system needed to cope with the effects of seawater and not corrode.

Our approach

With our extensive experience in offshore fire protection, we knew exactly what the Nasr oil field required.

We supplied over 100 high specification fire hydrants in two different configurations, each manufactured from Cupronickel. This is a material that’s highly resistant to corrosion in seawater. 20 bar rated EEMUA Flanges

were each fitted with a Knowsley 2120/X/8 FM approved Hose-safe Series pressure reducing valve to improve operations.

To ensure an extra level of protection from seawater corrosion, we covered the entire hydrant fabrication in an internal and external application of thermosetting epoxy powder coating: Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE).
