Turbinator for Road Loading Bay 1

Turbinator for Road Loading Bay

A major UK energy company intended to change the service for one of their road loading bays at a site located in North West England to accommodate flammable hydrocarbons. This change required an upgrade of the fire system from water deluge to foam deluge.

The solution

A leading Oil & Gas contractor engaged with Knowsley SK to design, manufacture, supply and commission a state of the art foam system to protect personnel and infrastructure at the facility.

Knowsley SK carried out hydraulic analysis of the existing system and re located nozzles to provide adequate coverage in accordance with recognised industry standards. At the heart of the new system – a Turbinator foam pump/proportioner skid with foam concentrate tanks and all necessary valves and instrumentation for the operation of the system. The Turbinator is a water driven positive displacement foam proportioning pump driven by a special volumetric water motor directly coupled to a precision gear pump. This unique design ensures the correct ratio of firewater to foam concentrate is fixed over the full operating range, making the Turbinator the perfect proportioning technology for systems with different flows such as multi-legged deluge systems, sprinkler systems and mobile equipment.

All major components were skid mounted and prior to install were inspected/tested thoroughly at KSK’s manufacturing facility, which ensured installation time on site was kept to a minimum and that the delivered performance of the unit is exactly as designed.

The result

This resulted in an on-time project delivery against a tight schedule which allowed the loading activities to proceed in a safe manner with both people and assets properly protected.
