PFAS (Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are chemicals commonly used in AFFF, AFF-AR, FFFP and C8/C6 FP firefighting foams.
PFAS
What?
Where?
There is a global push to ban the use of these chemicals with certain countries and states already having taken this action.
Why?
There has already been numerous fines and lawsuits due to contamination of water by PFAS and this is expected to grow in the future.
Due to the concerns about using PFAS foams many operators are now in the process of transitioning to fluorine free foams (F3, FFF) that do not contain PFAS chemicals. This isn’t as simple as just changing one type of foam out for the other – the entire system should be assessed. Knowsley SK can help guide you through the transition from FPAS to Flourine Free Foams (F3, FFF)
Often FFF’s are considerably more viscous then PFAS foams and may well need greater application rates depending upon the specific foam and application. When using foams around water courses consideration must be given to the fact that Fluorine Free foams do have a greater aquatic toxicity than PFAS based foams however this is short lived and reduced through dilution and dispersion. There are however proportioning systems on the market today that allow the system to be tested without mixing foam and water.
"If you are considering upgrading your current systems or a change out to fluorine free foams in the near future we would be very pleased to assist you in this process."
- Recommendation of FF foam types.
- Assessment of current system to determine if any modifications are required.
- Supply of the very latest in foam proportioning technology that can be tested without mixing foam with water.
- Testing and commissioning.
- Ongoing service and health check.
Foam proportioners
Turbinator
- Flowrates up to 12,000 l/min
- Compact and simple
- Fixed or mobile
- Dry running to nfpa20
- Troublefree start-up
- No external power required
The water driven foam proportioner designed to accurately mix extinguishing foam concentrate with freshwater or seawater.
The Turbinator is available with capacities to suit most applications and can be used in fixed systems or as a mobile unit such as fire trucks, trailers and hand-portable use.
The Turbinator consists of two main parts: a water driven engine and a foam concentrate pump. The motor and pump are connected and integrated in a compact housing. The unique design of the Turbinator makes the device self-priming. The foam pump develops a strong suction lift, resulting in a reliable and uninterrupted supply of extinguishing foam concentrate.
Foamtronic
- Huge flow range
- Smart technology
- High accuracy
- Environmentally friendly
- Self diagnostics
- Replacement for balanced pressure proportioners
- Test without using foam concentrate
Foamtronic is an electronic foam mixing system which very accurately mixes foam concentrate & water based on the actual fire demand of the system.
Designed for high value foam systems, the accurate mixing of foam concentrate and water is achieved by continuous monitoring of the firewater and foam concentrate flows, using electromagnetic flowmeters and real-time adjustment of the concentrate control valve. The accuracy and stability of the system is based on the combination of specially selected components and a unique control system with state-of-the-art logic developed specifically for FoamTronic.
The control system records all process values and alarms during operation or test which are available via a user-friendly interface.
